An Ode to Instagram

20130813-063537.jpg I. Love. Instagram. Like an insane amount. While I’ve fiddled with other forms of social media, namely Facebook and Twitter, neither have yielded the same results as Instagram. As of this morning I have nearly 400 followers and less of 10 of those are actually friends and family members, the rest are strictly Lefty Lex fans. Amazing!

Let me share with you a few of the awesome things that have resulted from my IG love:

  1.  I’ve been able to connect with a bunch of adoptive mamas-in-awaiting and have been blessed to contribute some Lefty Lex goodies towards their adoption fundraising efforts. (Due unto others…) 20130813-063547.jpg
  2. I’ve been able to connect with an insane amount of crafty biz chicks and watch the beauty of this community as everyone supports/promotes one another. This connection ultimately brought me to my next upcoming fair, Penelope Lane Boutique! (SoCal mark your calendars for 9/28 and take a trip to Seal Beach; more info to come). 20130813-063553.jpg
  3. I found my new most favoritest product ever… the teeny tiny hoop pendant by Dandelyne!!! I can’t even put into words how completely head over heels in love I am with these hoops. Seriously. I received my first shipment (of many to come) two weeks ago and have been in love ever since. Sorry Husband. 20130813-063559.jpg
  4. I had an insanely successful Instasale with the support of my fabulous IG followers! I plan on doing a full length blog on this experience alone in the near future. But it was a fabulous experience and I plan on doing many more to add funds towards our adoption.

20130813-063634.jpg

5. I have been able to share bragging photos of my adorable niece! Yes, I am officially an auntie! My sister-in- law gave birth to our first niece, Emersyn Lucille, one week ago today and little Emery has stolen our hearts. I know that I’m biased, but is she not the cutest little niece to ever grace the planet? I can’t wait until she and her parents move back to San Diego so I can teach her to be the youngest crafter ever!

20130813-064519.jpg

In closing, if you’re not yet on Instagram, get there! And once you’re there, follow @LeftyLex. Then you can keep up with all of my shenanigans in real time! I wish you all a very merry Tuesday and I’ll speak with you soon. Cheers!

*Disclaimer: I will do my very best not to include photos of the above child in every single post from here on out, but no promises can be made. You have been warned.

You Can’t Win Them All

Well, this Saturday was yet another craft fair. These things are starting to feel fairly routine at this point… thank God! However this fair was unlike any other that I have been a part of thus far because this fair only had (drumroll, please) about 10 attendees the entire time! Yes, literally hours passed by between visitors. It. Was. Dreadful.

20130723-061801.jpg

I was very, very grateful that I was, at least, sharing a booth with Kate of Small and Great Crochet or else I would have gone completely mad. At the end of the day, when I was beginning to feel like crap, Kate said: at least we got to hang out. And she was right! We ended up having over eight hours to get to know each other better and come up with a few fabulous crafty ideas. One of which I am literally bursting at the seams to share, but I must keep it under-wraps for the time being. Just know that it is going to be awesome!

20130723-061808.jpg

Ultimately the fair was a bust, but I think that each fair (no matter how terrible or successful) is a learning experience. And apparently there was a lot of learning to do this past Saturday. The top two lessons would be this: 1.) Marketing is absolutely key; if you’re not willing to market a fair properly, then there is no reason to even have a fair, and 2.) You get what you pay for, if the booth fee is low there is most definitely a reason why. Oh well, no use crying over spilled milk!

Christmas in July

Hello and happy Wednesday! Today marks three more days until my last craft fair of the summer… I think. I love doing fairs but while they can be exciting, they are also exhausting!

I am, however, looking forward to this particular fair for a few reasons:

  1. It’s going to be a small fair,
  2.  I’m sharing a booth with my crafty pal, Kate of Small and Great Crochet (!!!),
  3. This fair’s theme is Christmas (and I had a lot of Christmas items left from last year!)
  4. I get to have conversations with other individuals who support the handmade movement!

This fair is being hosted by the Granite Hills High School Choir from 8AM to 3PM at 1719 E. Madison Ave in El Cajon, CA. You’ll see our little blue 10×10 pop-up in the parking lot. And (if you can keep a secret), we’ll be the ones with a Christmas tree in our booth! Sshhhh! We thought that we were so clever with that idea. Little crafty geniuses.

If you’re a local San Diegan, then I hope to see you there!

Round 2: Two Shabby Sisters Craft Sale!

It would appear that I am a glutton for pain. Yes, I am doing yet another craft fair this weekend… in just 4 days!

Remember the lovely girls from Two Shabby Sisters? If you don’t, then do yourself a favor and click here: https://leftylex.com/2013/06/20/sdicm-vendor-two-shabby-sisters/. Well, they have decided to unload of a few more of their leftover SDICM lovelies by having a fair of their own and asked if I would like to join them. Of course! Needless to say, I am going to be stitching my little heart out for the next 3 days so that I am well stocked for the TSSCS. Wish me luck!

And what providence, I haven’t unloaded my car yet!

If your’re in the SoCal area, please stop on by. More details can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/TwoShabbySisters?fref=ts

And here’s my tiny ad here: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/eve/3896049403.html be sure to pass this along. Cheers!

SDICM Final Push!

With the San Diego Indie Craft Market just 2 short days away, the final push has come upon us! And while I feel surprisingly calm (this time around), I have read several nervous FB posts, Tweets, and Insta-posts from my fellow vendors. I cannot figure out (for the life of me) why some of these extremely talented ladies have butterflies! The crafts(wo)manship of this fair is going to be phenomenal! Several vendors and I have agreed that we need to have our own vendor swap after the customers leave… I have already eyed about 10 lovelies that I would kill for!

SDICM Vendor: LoveNote Crafts

Today I am privileged to introduce you to a fabulous San Diego Indie Craft Market Vendor whom I love to Insta-stalk… Lovenotes Crafts!

20130605-182256.jpg

Please introduce yourself to the good people! Hi, I’m Emily! I have a fun little shop called LoveNote Crafts where I sell my handmade hair accessories and paper whims. By day, I’m a counselor and by night I’m a crafter. So when I’m not in the office, spending time with friends, or taking care of my family of 4, you’ll find me squeezing in stitching, cutting, crocheting, and blogging in every nook and cranny of time I can find!

So what exactly are your favorite LoveNote Crafts to make? And what materials do you most enjoy working with? Hair clips, sweater clips, and fabric tape ‘n tags. I love working with wool felt—it’s so soft to the touch and easy to work with. Pretty floral cotton fabrics, whether they are vintage sheets or new on the bolt, really make my heart flutter. Roses represent hope and love to me so you’ll find plenty of them incorporated in to my items.

What inspires you to create your lovelies? After a long and productive day in the office, time spent hanging out with friends, or simply enjoying being at home with my family inspires me to sit down, relax, and create. The quiet of the late (oftentimes very late) evening and early morning is when I feel most creative. It’s a reward to myself, i.e., “good job today counselor- wife-mom-sister-daughter-friend!”. To me, these life roles are gifts so being able to sit down after a busy day and craft a bit is another blessing to be very thankful for.

Would you like to share your five favorite creations with us?

20130613-070725.jpg

1.) Photo Garland Kit—great for displaying photos or notes (cute and functional too!) 2.) Cotton Hair Bows—perfect for the girly girls in all of us. 3.) Wool Felt Blooms—lovely in fun colors all year round. 4.) Sweater Clips/Collar Guards—so “Mad Men” and very feminine. 5.) Cotton Fabric Tape—cute way to dress up gifts or use while scrapping (this is where I get my floral fabric fix!) I cannot wait to see these fabric tapes in person, they look absolutely divine!!!

Lastly, Emily, where can the good people shop your products and keep up with you online? Please stop on by! It would be awesome to “see” you =)

SDICM Vendor: Jill’s Eclectic Designs

Good people, you are in for a superb treat today as we meet yet another fabulous San Diego Indie Craft Market vendor! I am pleased to introduce you to Jill’s Eclectic Designs.

20130612-092456.jpg

Please tell us who you are and what you do! Hi there! My name is Jill, of Jill’s Eclectic Designs, and I am a mixed-media artist, a mother of a beautiful boy and a wife to an amazing Husband who is my biggest fan and supporter. I incorporate my uncommon view on the world in my art and I am passionate about creating pieces that are timeless and inspire others.

What would you consider your creative specialities? Jewelry, accessories and décor from “junk” and forgotten jewels that would otherwise end up in a landfill; a little *Sparkle* and a little *Rust*.

What are your favorite materials to work with? I love anything that is vintage and old and has a story behind it. Whether it’s an antique silver spoon, a broken vintage necklace to take apart and give new life to, a tattered belt that no longer functions for it’s intended purpose, a lonely chandelier crystal, or an old key that has long lost the lock it once belonged to-the more rust and patina the better!

What inspires you to create your lovely treasures? The old pieces I find are what actually inspire me the most. I love rummaging through thrift stores, flea markets, and estate/yard sales hunting for the pieces that speak to me and spark my creativity.

Would you like to share a few of your favorite lovelies with us? I have so many favorites it’s hard to choose! I love the bracelet made with my late Grandmother’s sewing tape and the bracelet made from my late Grandfather’s belt-they are very sentimental to me! I also adore the hand-forged “He Restores My Soul” heart necklace-that was created during a difficult time in my life and it’s a constant reminder to have faith no matter what life hands you. Amen!

20130612-092503.jpg

Are you in love with Jill’s work yet? I know that I am! I cannot wait to mosey on over to her booth at the San Diego Indie Craft Market and see what all of this goodness looks like in person! I’m sure she’d love to see you there too, so mark your calendars for June 23rd… less than two weeks! More info here: https://www.facebook.com/SDIndieCraftMarket?fref=ts.

SDICM Vendor: My Lucky Dragon

If you are ever looking for a fun way to unwind at the end of a rough day, then you are going to adore meeting today’s featured San Diego Indie Craft Market vendor, My Lucky Dragon!

20130602-145821.jpg

Tell us a little about yourself! Hi! My name is Christy Nieto and I own My Lucky Dragon. I’ve been making bath and body treats for 2 years. I’m a bath-a-holic! Since I was a little girl I took hour-long baths having fun with sweet smelling bubbles and bath toys. Now that I’m an adult, I still take one-hour baths but now I’m also a sweet toothed bath-a-holic. So naturally I combined the two. I make fun dessert inspired soaps and natural skin care.

What inspires you to create? I love using organic and raw ingredients. I’m inspired by sweet treats and beauty. I needed something to do while my husband was out to sea and training for a year and a half. so I decided to put my aromatherapy certification to good use and make bath and body treats.

What are your favorite products to create? My soap cupcakes, bath bombs, sugar cube scrubbies, and natural skin care products.

20130606-055231.jpg

And seeing as I am China-obsessed, I have to ask where your shop name came from. I was born in the year of the Dragon, and in the Asian culture that’s a very BIG deal! They believe it’s the luckiest sign in the Chinese Zodiac. My mom always loved to brag about that so, in her honor, the name was born!

Be sure to follow Christy on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/myluckydragon and check out her shop on Etsy (http://www.etsy.com/shop/myluckydragon)! Don’t her handmade bath goodies look yummy enough to eat?!

And don’t forget to look for her booth at the San Diego Indie Craft Market on June 23rd! More SDICM info here: https://www.facebook.com/SDIndieCraftMarket?fref=ts. I’m sure that she’d love to meet you!

SDICM Vendor: Small & Great Crochet

And now, time to meet the lovely Kate Wood of Small and Great Crochet!

20130601-001824.jpg

So who are you and what do you do? My name is Kate, and I’m a bit of a crochet newbie — I only learned how to put hook to yarn in March 2011, when my mom (who was just learning herself) taught me the basic stitches during a long car trip. Before I really even had the basics down, I was off and running! Err, I mean, stitching. I went from granny squares to amigurumi to Tunisian crochet within just a few weeks, and a year in, my apartment looked like a yarn store. My friends’ and family members’ homes overflowed with the stuff I’d made, too.

I make all crocheted things great and small! I design all of my own original patterns. I really have two directions I go in. One is my accessories, which are made from hand-dyed yarn. My yarns are named after the gemstone streets in PB, and my patterns for hats, scarves, and more are named for places around San Diego county. Two is my amigurumi, which more or less means “soft toy” in Japanese. Little stuffed critters! My tiny teddies (the little striped bears) are my bestsellers, but I do lots of other stuff. Making their debut at the SDICM will be ladybugs! I would like to interject here and say that, as an owner of one of these “tiny teddies”, they are absolutely adorable and EVERYONE needs one!

What are your favorite materials? Yarn, of course! But I really love working with natural fibers the best. In particular, I have hats that are done with a hand-dyed organically-grown cotton that are just yummy. I also dye a cotton/acrylic blend that I’m really fond of — it feels like an extra-cuddly version of your favorite t-shirt.

Who and/or what inspires you to create? A couple of things. One, I’m very inspired by San Diego. Besides all the pattern and dye naming, my accessories are all geared toward a SoCal aesthetic — laid-back but luxe. Second, nature — I know the stuffed toys and gifts I make are cartoon-y/kawaii versions of the real animals, but I just LOVE animals and plants, which is why I keep stitching them!

Also the reason I got into crochet in the first place is my family. My mom, and my beloved late grandmother, are/were both avid knitters, and really good at it. I always wished I were good at it, but I am all thumbs when it comes to knitting. My mom was taught the basic crochet stitches a couple of years ago by a friend, and though she didn’t really get the hang of it, she figured it out enough to teach me. Once I started, I basically never stopped.

Care to show and tell us about your five favorite creations?

20130601-002208.jpg
1.) My little horse — I kept the first successful one I made (this pattern is HARD and it took a TON of trial and error to get it right). He’s become my unofficial mascot!

2.) The “Carlsbad” hat — this is a slouchy beanie worked in hand-dyed, organically-grown and processed cotton. The pic I attached shows examples of the hat in four colors — L-R: Garnet, Turquoise, Tourmaline, Sapphire. It’s the hat I wear the most myself (in the pic you have of me from North Park it’s what I have on).

3.) The “Tiny Teddy” — consistently my biggest craft fair hit. I get custom requests for these guys too. I’ve had several people ask me about doing a smaller version (an even tinier teddy!) so that may be in the works… it needs more testing before it goes live.

4.) My crocheted states. I know these don’t really fit precisely with either of my “themes,” but it was all the enthusiasm and encouragement that I got from giving these to people as gifts that really motivated me to turn crafting into a business. Another interjection here: these are super cute too!

5.) The “Swami’s” scarf — this is a pic of the mini version. I also do the Swami’s stitch as a headband and a larger scarf. I wind up using lots of circles (e.g., my whole booth display is patterned with giant orange circles!) so I feel like this is kind of my signature stitch. I meet a lot of crocheters via this scarf style — people always want to know how it’s made.

And lastly, where can the good people find you? Haha, where can’t I be found!
